Practical notes for Myanmar

  • Appointment-only submissions – the consular desk will not accept walk-ins; book a slot before sending your file.
  • Which overseas documents are accepted? Only certificates issued in the UK, its Crown Dependencies or Overseas Territories, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the Republic of Ireland are eligible. Anything from another country must be legalised in that country, not in London.
  • FCDO step sometimes waived – documents from Crown Dependencies & BOTs still need an additional UK apostille before the embassy stamp; Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Irish originals can go straight to the embassy after legalisation in their home state.
  • ID & copies – lodge one photocopy of the document and a passport copy for each signatory; marriage or CNI certificates require copies of both spouses’ passports.
  • Payment & turnaround – pay cash only when you lodge; the express service currently returns files in ≈ 2–3 weeks (no slower service is offered).
  • No foreign content – if a UK document names or authorises a foreign-incorporated company, the embassy will refuse to stamp it.

  • Translations – most Myanmar authorities will ask for Burmese. Arrange the sworn translation after the consular stamp so the translator can attach it behind, not over, the legalised original.

  • Payment: The embassy accepts cash only; cards or bank transfers are not accepted.

  • Bundling – the consulate charges per document even if several items share one apostille; bundle only if the recipient expressly agrees.

Do I really need both an apostille and a Myanmar Embassy stamp?

Yes. For Myanmar, the route is UK certification (if needed) → Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office apostille → Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar – Consular Section legalisation stamp.

If it’s a public UK document (e.g., a registry/court-issued document with the correct seals), it can often be apostilled as-is. “Private” documents (powers of attorney, contracts, qualifications, certified copies) usually need a UK solicitor or notary’s certification first.
